When Americans want swim instruction they naturally think of the YMCA.  We provide
more than just swimming skills.  At the Hammond Area YMCA you are taught how to
swim, but you also learn safety skills and first aid.  Our water exercise programs will
provide you with enjoyment for a lifetime.

All Aquatic sessions are five weeks long and require advanced registration.

Parent Child Class   6 Months - 36 Months
Segments 3 & 4 only
Class is an introduction to the aquatic environment for parents and their infants. Parents
are encouraged to develop appropriate expectations for their child's performance in the
water. They learn basic water skills while socializing with other children and parents by
using games and songs to create a comfortable, positive environment. Swim diaper
required.

MOMMY & ME:  Ages 18 months to 3 years

Thursday  11:00 am to 12 noon

Preschool Swim Lessons   Ages 3 to 6
The preschool swim lesson program will introduce children ages 3 to 6 years to the
fundamentals of swimming and water safety.  We also provide children the opportunity to
develop social skills, self esteem, body awareness, and independence.  We strive to
create a pleasant fun atmosphere.  The first 10 to 15 minutes of class is devoted to story
time and coloring.  Water safety is also discussed.  Parents may observe on deck.
Thursday 10:00 am - 11:00 am   or   1:00 - 2:00 pm


Pike                    Ages 3 to 6
Basic water safety is introduced.  Floating, treading water blowing bubbles with face in
water, and basic swimming positions are taught.  Comfort in both shallow and deep
water is emphasized. .
Tuesdays 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm  
Thursdays  4:00 pm  or  (5:00 pm Segment 1 & 2 only)   
Saturdays 10:00 am  or  12:00 noon  or  1:00 pm  or  2:00 pm.

EEL                    Ages 3 to 6
Floating and treading skills are emphasized further.  Basic stroke techniques are
learned for freestyle, and elementary backstroke; introduction to sidestroke and
breaststroke; water sport skills.
Tuesdays 4:00 pm  or  5:00 pm  or  6:00 pm  
Thursdays  4:00 pm  or (5:00 pm Segment 1 & 2 only) or 6:00 pm  
Saturdays 10:00 am or 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm or 2:00 pm.


Ray/Starfish     Ages 3 to 6
Diving, treading skills, underwater swimming; sidestroke, and breaststroke.  Refine all
other strokes previously learned, water sport basics.
Thursday 5:00 pm   or   Saturday  11:00 am

Polliwog           Ages 7 to 13
Basic water safety and life jacket use is introduced. Floating, treading
water, blowing bubbles with face in the water, and basic swimming
positions are taught. Comfort in both shallow and deep water is
emphasized.

Guppy              Ages 7 to 13
Floating and treading are emphasized further.  Basic stroke techniques are taught for
freestyle, backstroke, and elementary backstroke.  Introduction to sidestroke,
breaststroke, and water sport skills.

Minnow            Ages 7 to 13
Diving, treading, and underwater swimming; sidestroke, breaststroke; refine all other
strokes previously learned.  Basics of water sports continued.
Tuesday  7:00 pm   -   Thursday  7:00 pm  or  Saturday  9:00 am


Fish/Flying Fish Shark & Porpoise    Ages 7 to 13
In our most advanced levels, students will learn butterfly and refine all other strokes. At
these levels they begin preparation for competitive swimming.  Students will learn
"racing" techniques, which will include starts, turns, and dives.  Endurance and technique
are stressed at this level. The Junior Lifeguard class is highly recommended for students
at this level.

Teen/Adult Classes
Learn new strokes or refine those previously learned.  Adult beginners are welcome!

Red Cross Lifeguard Course  -  11 to 14 years
T
he American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course teaches the skills needed to
prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.  Participants are certified in Life
guarding, First Aid, AED's and Adult, Child and Infant CPR.  Participants must be 15
years of age and be able to swim a 300 yard continuous swim (front crawl & breast
stroke) and complete a timed dive and swim. Call 845-1507 x 237 for dates and times.

American Red Cross Junior Lifeguard Class
This exciting class is ideal for our most advanced swimmers in the Fish/Flying
Fish/Shark Porpoise levels.  This American Red Cross class gives swimmers ages 11
to 14 years a jump start into a life guarding career. Students will not be certified in any
skills but will receive a certificate of completion.  Students must be able to swim 25
yards freestyle, tread water for one minute, and swim 10 yards underwater.  

Saturdays   -   9:00 am  to 11:30 am.      February 13th - May 15th

Swimnastics-Water Exercise Class       
Shallow water exercise is an ideal form of exercise for men and women of all ages.  
Swimnastics promotes strength, increased mobility, flexibility, improved circulation and
relaxation.  A good workout without the joint jarring and muscle pounding effects of land
exercise.  Ages 16 years and over.
Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm  or
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at  9:00 am to 10:00 am.

Non-Member Fee     $40   2x/Week        $60    3x/Week

Aqua-Nuts Water Exercise Class  18 years and up
Low  impact shallow water exercise.  Designed to increase mobility, flexibility and
strength.  Come socialize and stay healthy! This class is great for individuals with
arthritis.
Tuesday and Thursday at  9:00 am to 10:00 am.  

             Member Fee     $0        Non-Member Fee     $40

Fear No More
For individuals that are not ready to jump right into the progressive programs and need
to work on comfort in the water.  This class offers more individual attention to work on
comfort level and floating.  Classes are open to  all ages from preschoolers to seniors
and entire families (limit four).  

$60.00 for five lessons.   Thursday at 5:00 pm, and Saturday at   11:00 am.

Private Swim Lessons
Private swim lessons are available by advanced registration and appointment.

Fee is $25 for a half hour lesson and $45 for a one hour lesson.
